Canned Goods

From garden vegetables and fruits to jams, jellies, pickles and sauces, the Canned Goods Division celebrates the tradition of home food preservation. Review the information below before entering.

Important Dates
Registration: 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11
Pickup: 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18

Who Can Enter

Adult: Ages 19-64
Senior Citizens: Ages 65 and older
Sub-Junior: Ages 4-8
Junior: Ages 9-13
Senior: Ages 14-18
Day Care/Preschool: Ribbons only

Awards

Blue, red and white ribbons are awarded based on merit. Grand and Reserve Champion rosettes may be awarded within each division by age category, also based on merit.

Canned Goods Rules

Jars: Canned goods must be in standard pint or quart jars, such as Kerr or Ball. Mayonnaise jars, other odd-shaped jars and colored jars will not be accepted. Jars must be clean, polished and free of chips.

Decoration: No embellishments are allowed. Do not cover or decorate the lid or any part of the jar.

Identification: Do not put the exhibitor’s name on any part of the jar. Names are allowed only on the entry tag.

Sealing: Lids must be sealed. Paraffin may not be used for sealing, and lids and rings must be free of rust and other defects.

Judging: All jars will be opened during judging. Homemade wine entries will not be accepted.

Labels: Labels should be 1½ inches wide by 3 inches long and placed on the jar opposite the brand name. The label should include the name or recipe and the date canned.

Check-In: All canned items will be inspected at check-in. Items that are not properly sealed or are spoiled in any way will be disqualified.
